Mt Vernon Fans, Did You Know?

Did you know? There are only two schools that went undefeated in both basketball and football in the same season. They are Houston Madison who went 40-0 in 1985 and Mt Vernon in 1948. The only head coach to go undefeated in basketball and football at 30-0 and 11-0 is Milburn “Catfish” Smith with the 1948 Mt Vernon Tigers.

Muenster is the only school to win State in football, basketball, and baseball. They accomplished that last year.

Mt Vernon boys are about to take the floor and follow the Mt Vernon girl’s state championship win. They are two wins away. That has happened only eleven times. There are eight teams accomplishing that feat; Buna ’56, ’57, and ’61, South Oak Cliff ’77, Morton ’87, Abernathy ’91, Sudan ’95, Nazareth ’02, Brock ’02 and ’03 and Shallowater ’04.

Mt Vernon (34-1) takes on Santa Rosa (24-14) at 3:00 pm today in San Antonio on K-Lake 97.7 and the Internet. A victory places the Purple Tigers against the Grandview (28-6) and Bowie (32-8) winner Saturday at 10:00 am.
