New Online Scam

We spoke with Hopkins County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Lewis Tatum Thursday about a new scam targeting local internet users. The scammer tells the intended victim that the provider is going out of business and wants to refund their money – then gets on line with the victim and makes the money in their bank account appear to vanish. The caller then demands they be paid $10,000 through Western Union to make the money come back. The money has actually never left the bank account. The scammer makes his money if the victim transfers the money via Western Union.
