The North Lamar High School Concert Band, under the direction of Jason R. Smith, competed in the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading contest Tuesday, April 17 at Mt. Pleasant High School.
For their prepared three pieces of music, Alhambra Grotto March by K. L. King, Song for Lyndsay by Andrew Boysen, and Shadow Rituals by Michael Markowski, they earned the highest rating of ‘Superior’ from all three judges. The band then was asked to look over a piece they have not seen and perform it for three different judges. For this portion of the contest, they also earned ‘Superior’ ratings from all three judges.
By earning ‘Superior’ ratings in both Concert and Sight-Reading, the band was awarded the UIL Sweepstakes trophy. This marks the 8th consecutive year under Smith that the band has achieved sweepstakes.
“I am very proud of this group of students,” said Smith. “The music we choose this year may be the hardest selection of music we have chosen since I have been at North Lamar for the concert band, and they performed it amazingly!”
North Lamar will be competing at Argyle High School on April 27 in the Ovation Concert Band festival at 4:30 p.m. Their Spring Concert is May 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the NLHS Auditorium. All are invited to attend.
