Starting Sunday (Nov 15), the National Weather Service in Shreveport changed its criteria for Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories to the following:
Winter Storm Warning (at least one of the following criteria met)
- >2″ of snow for any event
- >0.5″ of sleet for any event
- >0.25″ of ice for any event
Winter Weather Advisory (at least one of the following criteria met)
- 1-2″ of snow for any event
- <0.5″ of sleet for any event
- <0.25″ of ice for any event
This change is taking place due to partner feedback that indicated that significant impacts occurred with much less snow than 4 inches, and only an inch of snow can lead to issues on areas roads. A snowfall climatology indicated that snowfall events over an inch are infrequent enough across our four-state regions that an event over 2 inches has a significant impact.
