Our Athlete Of The Week Plus Football Tonight In Today’s Sports

Congratulations to Jaycie Proctor for being named this week’s athlete of the week. Jaycie is a junior on the North Lamar volleyball team. Head Coach Sara Beth Upchurch calls Jaycie a key defensive player saying, “she can get to balls that no one else can.” Congratulations once again to Jaycie Proctor.

After last week’s weather cancellations there are several football teams looking forward to taking the field Friday night. One of those teams, the Paris Wildcats, will be hosting 7th ranked Gilmer on 101.9 KBUS.

North Lamar did get their game in last week, but after a 0–2 start the Panthers will be ready to get back on the field in Crandall to take on the 13th ranked Pirates. That game can be heard on Mix 107–7.

Other area games will include Prairiland hosting Clarksville. Rivercrest at James Bowie. Winnsboro at Chisum. Honey Grove will be home to face Alba-Golden. Cooper will travel to Emory to play Rains. While Detroit will be at Boles.

It’s another special Thursday night high school football game tonight as the Hughes Springs Mustangs host the Waskom Wildcats. Last week, the Mustangs rolled over Arp 46-6. Waskom lost a close one 18-17 to West Rusk. Kickoff for tonight’s game is at 7:00 pm and will be broadcast on STAR 96.9. On Friday, Mt Vernon is at Canton, that game is at 7:30 pm on KLAKE 97.7. Daingerfield will travel to New Boston, that game is on STAR 96.9 at 7:30 pm. Sulphur Springs celebrates Homecoming as they host Terrell at 7:30 pm on STAR 95.9. Gilmer is at Paris, Rivercrest is at Bowie, Paul Pewitt is at Redwater, and Pittsburg travels to Tatum. Mt Pleasant if off this week.

There is also College football tonight: Tennessee Tech is at Utah State at 7:00 pm. And, tonight’s NFL game features Baltimore at Cincinnati at 7:20 on the NFL network.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence did not practice Wednesday because of a groin injury, but he will be on the field for work today. He is expected to be available to play Sunday night against the New York Giants.

Although he wouldn’t say specifically which ligament was damaged, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he has a sprained knee and that it’s been “pretty sore the last three days.” Rodgers was held out of practice on Wednesday, and although he said he did not need any practice time in order to play in Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, he could not yet commit to playing

Russell Westbrook underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday, a procedure that likely will force him to miss the entire preseason and could sideline him for the Oklahoma City Thunder’s first few regular-season games. Westbrook will be re-evaluated in four weeks, with the Thunder opening the season Oct. 16 against the Golden State Warriors.

One night after being shut out by the Angels, Texas only managed one run in their 8–1 loss Wednesday night. Yovani Gallardo took the loss for Texas and is now 8–5 on the season. The Rangers are off tonight before starting a series this weekend in San Diego.
