Emcee Brent Wilburn welcomes the audience and the top 16 Lamar County spellers.

The top sixteen Lamar County spellers competed at the Lamar County Spelling Bee on February 5, and two Paris ISD students claimed the top three places.

Paris Junior High School seventh-grader Luke de La Garza was named champion and Crockett Intermediate sixth grader Nicole Octavio tied with Emma McCarter from Chisum Middle School student for second place.

Luke de La Garza learns his spelling is correct while Nicole Octavio waits for her next turn.

Luke advances to the Golden Chick Regional Spelling Bee to be broadcast live from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, on WFAA Channel 8 from The George W. Bush Presidential Center.

The top two participants will receive all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Golden Chick Dallas Regional Spelling Bee is open to the 4th-8th-grade public, private, charter, and home school students within the 350 county Dallas region.
