Paris Police Chief Richard Salter has hired a Community Service Officer to handle non-emergency calls for assistance over the phone rather than dispatching an officer to the scene. In the next six months, the department will also have a self-reporting system where people can go online and report incidents or minor crimes injuries such as bike thefts or vehicle burglaries. There are now only 17 officers on the street, and Chief Salter plans to begin a nationwide recruiting campaign to find more officers.
