Today is the start of an annual Texas high school tradition. This morning kids from all across the state will strap on their helmets and begin two-a-day football practice. The first week will be more about installation of plays with players practicing in shorts, a t-shirt and helmets. Next week pads will be added. Each team will play in one or two scrimmages prior to the season beginning on August 26th.
The Texas Rangers complete a four game sweep of the Kansas City Royals that included a 5-3 win in the series finale last night. On Saturday, Texas won 2-1 on a walk off blast from the red hot Moreland. The Rangers are 62-44 and suddenly are back to having a six game lead in the AL West. Texas will be off today before beginning a three game set in Baltimore tomorrow.
The Dallas Cowboys are fully underway in Oxnard, California for training camp. The ‘Boys opened camp on Saturday, while on Sunday quarterback Tony Romo was given a scheduled day off, which has been common in the past during training camp. Dallas will have two full weeks of practice before playing in their first pre-season action next Saturday, August 13th at the Coliseum in Los Angeles against the Rams.
And in the PGA Championship, Jimmy Walker led the pack from the opening round all the way through Sunday evening to finish 14-under par. However, Walker had to hold off Jason Day, who finished 13-under. Walker will go home with over $1.8 million in winnings.
