Rangers Take the Rockies Plus A Busy HS Sports Slate

Paris – The Chisum Lady Mustang Volleyball picked up a victory in their season opener against James Bowie on Tuesday. Today the Lady Mustangs will host a tournament that will conclude on Saturday.

Tomorrow area high school football teams play their first scrimmages. The Paris Wildcats will be on the road against Celina Friday night at 7pm. The North Lamar Panthers will be at Denison tomorrow at 7 as well. Chisum will take on Howe. While Prairiland and Rivercrest square off at Patriot Stadium.

Mount Pleasant – Coming up this weekend area high school football teams take on their first opponents in scrimmages. The Mt. Pleasant Tigers host Liberty Eylau on Friday morning at 10am. Mt. Vernon will host Canton. The Pittsburg Pirates will be on the road at Carthage. And on Saturday morning Paul Pewitt will be in Red River County to take on the Clarksville Tigers at 10am as well.

In volleyball, the Mt. Pleasant Lady Tigers hit the road for the Van Tournament today.

Sulphur Springs – Coming up this weekend area high school football teams take on their first opponents in scrimmages. The Mt. Vernon Tigers will host the Canton Eagles on Friday. The Commerce Tigers are on the road to tune up against Whitesboro. Rains makes the trip to Alba-Golden. And Como-Pickton will be on the road to take on the Winnsboro Raiders.

In high school volleyball action the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats begin pool play tomorrow at the Garland Invitational. The tournament will conclude Saturday evening.

Yesterday afternoon the Texas Rangers held a press conference for Prince Fielder to announce his retirement from baseball. Prince finished his career with 319 home runs, the same total as his father, former major leaguer, Cecil Fielder.

Later in the day the Rangers beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4. Trailing in the 8th, Adrian Beltre stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered a two run single. The Rangers are now 68-47 on the season and have won five in a row and 10 of their last 13. Texas and Colorado wrap up their four game series this afternoon on KPLT 1490am and 96.3fm. First pitch is at 1:05.

On Saturday the Dallas Cowboys play their first pre-season game of the season at the Los Angeles Coliseum against the Rams. Kickoff on 101.9 KBUS is set for 7pm.

And at the Rio Olympics Katie Ledecky anchors the U.S.A 4x200m freestyle relay team to another gold medal. The victory brings the American medal count to 32 total and 11 gold. The U.S. men and women’s hoops teams also picked up victories yesterday in group play. First the women defeat Serbia 110-84 behind 25 points, including 6-three pointers from Diana Taurasi. The men followed up with a 98-88 win over Australia. Carmelo Anthony scored 31 points to become the nation’s all time Olympic scorer with 293 points passing David Robinson and LeBron James.
