Softball Plus A&M Commerce Women Begining Tournament Play This Week In Today’s Sports Update

The Prairiland Lady Patriots will start district tonight at home against Chapel Hill. The Prairiland softball team comes into the district with a 15-2-1 record. Also starting district softball tonight is the Chisum Lady Mustangs. They open the district on the road against Winnsboro, and the North Lamar Pantherettes will travel to Crandall.

On the baseball diamond, the Paris Wildcats open district play on the road at Liberty Eylau. The North Lamar Panthers will be at home for Senior night against Caddo Mills.

Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Hockey League (NHL) released a joint statement Monday confirming restricted locker room access as a preventative measure against the coronavirus.

NBA

The standings in the Western Conference for the NBA have the LA Lakers leading the pack with a 49-13 record. The Clippers follow them along with, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, No. 5 Oklahoma City, No. 6 Houston, and No. 7 Dallas Mavericks. New Orleans comes in at No. 9. Dallas picks up the action again tonight at San Antonio.

NCAA

Former Sulphur Springs Wildcat’s basketball player Keaston Willis has been named the Southland Conference’s freshman of the Year. Willis currently plays at the University of the Incarnate Word.

LSC

The ninth-ranked team in the nation in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Poll is Commerce. The Lady Lions have been nationally ranked 21 times in the WBCA poll, seven weeks in a row from 2007-08, and now 14 weeks in a row this season. The Lions will face a rematch of their LSC semifinal win, as they take on seventh-seed Eastern New Mexico at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The semifinal round of the tournament will be on Saturday, with the Regional Championship game to play on Monday. The winner of the Regional Tournament will advance to the Elite Eight in Birmingham, AL, which will begin Mar. 24.

ASC

Hardin-Simmons junior second baseman Mason McCord, of Greenville, hit .500 (5-of-10) with two doubles, a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored in the Cowgirls’ three-game series against Belhaven.

REGION XIV

The Eagles travel to Eastern Oklahoma State at Wilburton today. They flipped the schedule because of a wet field. Softball plays tomorrow at Kilgore.

Saltillo acknowledges they are going to miss their only senior on the team, Jacelyn Ochoa. District 24-A, honored her with Offensive MVP. Everyone else returns with an outstanding eighth-grade moving up. The team reached the regional finals. The MVP went to Chandler Bain and Anna Reeder of Saltillo. Avinger’s Naomi Fountain was Defensive MVP, and Skylar Stanley of Sulphur Bluff received Newcomer.
