Southwest Airlines To Stop Serving Peanuts On All Flights

It’s likely you know at least one person with peanut allergies, so perhaps the decision to stop serving peanuts on Southwest Flights makes sense. The airline says beginning August 1 they will stop offering complimentary peanuts on board as a precautionary measure for those who might suffer from potentially life-threatening nut allergies. A Southwest spokesperson says, “Peanuts forever will be part of Southwest’s history and DNA. We hope that our free pretzels. and the wonderful portfolio of free snacks on longer flights, served along with our legendary Southwest Hospitality, will please customers who might be nostalgic or sad to see peanuts go.” Though peanuts have been associated with flying for some time, they are perhaps most closely associated with Southwest, as when the budget airline emerged in 1971 it didn’t offer in-flight meals and instead promoted itself as the peanut airline with “peanut fares.”
