Sports Update For Thursday Jan. 9

Nikola Jokic scored 26 of his 33 points in the second half, including the winning basket with 7.9 seconds left, and the Denver Nuggets pulled out a 107-106 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night. Luka Doncic led Dallas with 27 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. The Mavericks played their fifth straight game without Kristaps Porzingis. Dallas will host the LA Lakers on Friday night.

Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s basketball sharpshooter Chania Wright has been named the Under Armour Student-Athlete of the Week by Lion Athletics. Wright, a junior from DeSoto, has had a spectacular last four games for the Lions. Prior to the winter break, she helped lead the Lions to a pair of road wins against Tarleton and TWU, earning LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Her defensive effort helped lead to multiple turnovers and baskets for the Lion offense. Then, in the first homestand of the 2020 calendar year, Wright had the most explosive week of her collegiate career. She set her career-high in points on Thursday against Cameron, only to tie it in the first half against Midwestern State, and eventually surpass it on Saturday.

The Dallas Stars enjoyed another comeback win last night as they beat the LA Kings 2-1 on the road. Dallas who has won five in a row got goals from Jamie Benn and Blake Comeau 37 seconds apart in the second period. Anton Khudobin Made 30 saves in the win. Dallas plays at Anaheim tonight.

Another junior college quarterback is heading to the NFL Georgia’s quarterback Jake Fromm, who has guided the Bulldogs to three consecutive SEC East titles, will bypass his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Fromm made the announcement on social media on Wednesday. Fromm is ranked as the fifth-best quarterback eligible for the 2020 draft, behind LSU’s Joe Burrow, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Oregon’s Justin Herbert, and Washington’s Jacob Eason.

San Diego State’s Coach Rocky Long is stepping down after nine seasons. Aztecs’ defensive line coach Brady Hoke is expected to replace Long. Hoke was San Diego State’s head coach in 2009 and 2010 before leaving to become Michigan’s head coach. Long, who had served as San Diego State’s defensive coordinator under Hoke, replaced Hoke with the Aztecs.

Will he stay or will he go? New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady had said in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans that it was “probably unlikely” and “hopefully unlikely” that he would retire, and now he has expanded on the topic. In an Instagram post Wednesday morning, Brady wrote, “In both life and football, failure is inevitable. You don’t always win. You can, however, learn from that failure, pick yourself up with great enthusiasm, and place yourself in the arena again. And that’s right where you will find me. Because I know I still have more to prove.”
