Student Wins Leadership Award

A&M-Texarkana Sophomore Student Wins Leadership Award.

TEXARKANA, Texas – Philip DeRouen, a sophomore student from Lafayette, LA, was recently awarded the 2018 Scott Bruner Award for Visionary Student Leadership. DeRouen received the award from Scott Bruner and Texas A&M University-Texarkana President Dr. Emily Cutrer during a recent ceremony.

This distinguished award, based solely on leadership and service to the University, is given to a student who exhibits ethical, creative direction and promotes a positive campus climate while remaining in good academic standing. The Scott Bruner award provides recognition for students like Philip, who strive to make A&M-Texarkana a better place for students to live, learn, and grow.

As a student, it is Philip’s passion to make the campus a better place that separates him from other student leaders. He has demonstrated that passion by taking on multiple leadership positions within the A&M-Texarkana campus community.
Philip serves as a student ambassador, a member of Phi Lambda Chi Fraternity, 2017-2018 Student Government Association President, Heart of a Leader Graduate of Team 622, and the Chancellor’s Student Advisory Council. He is also a Resident Assistant, an Academic Coach with the First Year Experience, an Orientation Leader, a member of TRiO Student Support Services, and the PATH Program.

Most recently, Philip has been hard at work bringing The National Society of Leadership and Scholars to the university. The process took more than a year, with DeRouen working closely with the national NSLS organization and traveling to New Jersey to receive specialized training and collaborate with other chapter presidents. To be formally inducted into the honor society students must complete a series of steps and processes designed to help bolster their leadership skills. TAMUT’s chapter held its first induction ceremony on May 1st and inducted 110 students, instantly becoming the most significant student-run organization on campus.
