Sulphur Springs ISD Responds To Alleged Bullying On Bus

NEWS RELEASE

From: Sulphur Springs ISD Superintendent’s Office

On January 11, 2022, Sulphur Springs Middle School Administration and the Sulphur Springs ISD Police Department learned of an incident on a school bus on January 8, 2022. Sulphur Springs ISD Administration and the Sulphur Springs ISD Police Department began an immediate investigation and communicated with SSMS staff members, parents, and students involved in the incident.

The district has determined that several SSMS students caused injury to other SSMS students on the bus. According to the SSISD Student Code of Conduct, the school implemented disciplinary measures to those students who caused the harm. In addition, the district is providing a supportive step for all students involved in the incident.

In addition to disciplinary measures taken by the SSISD Student Code of Conduct, several SSMS students/suspects face charges of injury to a child.

The district has also determined that the two SSISD staff members who were driving/monitoring the bus were negligent in the performance of their duty to maintain discipline and monitor their students. As a result, the district no longer employs these two staff members.

SSMS Administration continues to communicate with the families and students of those involved in the incident or affected by the staffing implications stemming from the incident.

SSISD is committed to student safety and the prevention of bullying. The district employs many anti-bullying programs primarily through character education at every grade level. Still, we want to take the opportunity to remind our community of our “Anonymous Alerts” program, which you can find on our District website at www.ssisd.net

Anonymous Alerts is our anti-bullying and safety reporting system that empowers students/community members to speak up/say something when any school community member is being bullied, hurt, or mistreated. We encourage every member of our community to visit the Anonymous Alerts page found on our district website.

The district is working to ensure that the opportunity for such an incident can never happen again. We are committed to providing the safest environment possible for our kids.

The process of managing this situation is ongoing. State and federal privacy laws prohibit the district from disclosing any further information concerning this specific incident.
