Lion Soccer predicted to finish first. Duty named Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year

COMMERCE– The Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team has been picked to finish first in this year’s Lone Star Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Additionally, named the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year is Lion junior Caitlin Duty. The annual poll results were released Wednesday by the LSC.

The Lions are entering their 20th season under head coach Neil Piper. The team went 15-6-1 last season, winning a third consecutive LSC Championship. The team advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament South Central Regional Championship game, falling to Colorado Mines. West Texas A&M was chosen to finish second while Midwestern State, whom the Lions defeated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, was picked to finish third.

“It’s nice to have that reputation and that respect from our peers,” Piper said about the team’s preseason ranking. “But at the end of the day, it doesn’t mean much. We still have to go out and play well. If anything, it puts a target on our backs.”

LSC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Caitlin Duty is coming into her third season in the net for the Lions. During the 2016 season, she was named Second Team All-LSC, starting in all 22 games. She had 88 saves on the year and had a save percentage of .854, the best percentage in the conference. She had 11 shutouts during the season.

“She has to build on what she did last year,” Piper said of Duty. “She led the league in a lot of statistical categories, and we need her to keep playing well and to continue to improve.”

The Lions will begin the 2017 season with a home match against Florida Tech on Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lion Soccer Field. The opening weekend will conclude on Sept. 3 with a home game against Central Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m.

Season tickets are available for the entire soccer season by visiting the box office at The Field House, visiting WeAreLionsTix.com or by calling (903) 468-8756. Full season tickets are $35, with mini-season packages available for three-game Lone Star packages ($12).
