Men’s Cross Country predicted to finish second, women to finish fifth in LSC Coaches’ Poll

COMMERCE– The Texas A&M University-Commerce men’s cross country team has been picked to finish second in this year’s Lone Star Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Lion women cross country team has been predicted to finish fifth. The annual poll results were released Thursday by the LSC.

The Lions are coming into their first official season under head coach George Pincock. Pincock had previously been named interim head coach late in the 2016 season before officially being named the head coach in December. The Lion men finished second in the LSC last season with two All-Conference performers. West Texas A&M, the winner of the LSC Men’s Cross Country Championship in 2016, was chosen to finish first. The Lion women finished in seventh place in the LSC with one All-Conference award winner last season. Midwestern State was picked to finish in first place after placing first during the 2016 season.

“To see the preseason polls come out and to have the men at number two and the women at five, it’s a good start for us,” Pincock said. “But we want to continue moving forward from there. Our big goal this year is to progress every single week and have our biggest and best performances when they matter most. That would be at the LSC Championship, the Regional Championship and hopefully the National Championship as well. For both the men’s and women’s teams, we have a lot of new faces and a lot of new people, and we think they will contribute immediately and make a good impact.”

The Lions will open their season on Friday (Sep 8) with the East Texas Shootout meet, hosted in Centennial Park in Commerce. The match starts at 6:00 pm with the women’s 4K. The men’s 6K begins at 6:45 pm. This event will be the only home meet for the Lions this season.
