Lions ranked No. 20 in preseason AVCA poll.

COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team is the No. 20 ranked team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, as announced this week. This marks the 13th consecutive AVCA poll in which the Lions have been nationally ranked.

The Lions are coming off one the best seasons in program history, finishing the year with a 30-6 record. The team caught fire in the LSC Tournament, winning three straight matches to win the program’s second-ever LSC Tournament Championship. The team earned its second consecutive berth into the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Regional Championship match. The Lions won 23 of their final 25 games of the 2018 season.

After making their first appearance in the AVCA poll in nearly 30 years during week two of the 2018 season, the Lions have appeared in every survey since.

The Lions begin the season on Sept. 6 when they will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. for a tournament hosted by Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist. After eight matches on the road to begin the year, the Lions will host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Sept. 20 in their first home match of the season, as well as the first week of conference play.

A&M-Commerce will host 12 home matches during the regular season, including 11 games against LSC opponents. Lions picked to finish fifth in LSC preseason poll.

RICHARDSON– The Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team has been predicted to finish fifth in the annual Lone Star Conference women’s soccer preseason poll. The poll, as well as the preseason superlatives, were announced by the conference office on Wednesday.

The Lions are coming off of a 9-8-0 season, in which the Lions only played three games on their home field due to heavy rain throughout the season. Despite this, the Lions rallied to qualify for the LSC Tournament for the sixth consecutive season, finishing in fourth place in the conference standings. The 2019 squad is a mix of returners and new players, as the Lions return 11 student-athletes from a season ago, while also adding 14 new student-athletes.

West Texas A&M was predicted to finish in first place in the LSC, receiving 18 first-place votes. Dallas Baptist finished in second place with eight first-place votes. A&M-Commerce had the third-most first-place votes, winning three. The preseason poll included votes from the conference head coaches and sports information directors, as well as a member of the media from each school.

With LSC expansion pushing the number of women’s soccer teams to 14 teams will now play each other once per regular season. The top seven teams will qualify for the LSC Tournament. The winners who earn their conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Lions begin the 2019 season on the road against Westminster on Sept. 5. Their first home match will be played on Sept. 12 against Ouachita Baptist.
