Becker, Lions place second in weather-shortened Lion Classic
ARLINGTON – The Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s golf team placed three players in the top ten on the individual leaderboard to claim second place in the Lion Classic team standings at Texas Rangers Golf Club on Monday.
Inclement weather and team safety considerations shortened the event to only 18 holes. All ten competing teams battled chilly, windy, and rainy conditions in the fall season’s final event.
The Lions shot a 21-over par 309, finishing eight strokes ahead of Arkansas-Fort Smith and UT Tyler. Dallas Baptist took the team title at 6-over par 294.
“The team did great, showing a lot of grit and determination in tough weather conditions,” said Lion head coach Lauren Mason. “We finished ahead of several teams who we were behind in our last event, which will help our head-to-head rankings when regional rankings come out.
“I’m very proud of Michelle Becker for claiming the runner-up spot and tying her college career low. That is a great accomplishment for her after missing the early part of the season.”
Michelle Becker (San Antonio – Reagan) took her first career top 10 finish by claiming the runner-up spot at even-par 72, two strokes behind champion Julia Garcia of DBU. Becker was the most consistent player in the field, carding 16 pars, including her first 12 holes in succession. After a bogey on a par 3, she birdied a par five just two holes later and closed out at even.
Sophie-Charlott Hempel (Pirmasens, Germany) and Karlee Nichols (Smithson Valley) tied for 10th place at 6-over par 78. It is Hempel’s ninth career top 10 finish Nichols’ second career top 10. Hempel placed in the top 10 in all three of the Lions’ fall events.
Paige-Lee Garris (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Inma Ortiz Prieto (Huelva, Spain) placed 26th, each carding a 9-over par 81. Individual competitor Lexi Bubenchik (New Concord, Ohio) placed 22nd at 8-over par 80.
The event concludes the Lions’ fall season. A&M-Commerce returns to the links competitively on February 8-9, 2021, at the Jack Brown Memorial hosted in Laredo by Texas A&M International.
