A&M-Commerce challenges top-seeded SLU in Southland Semifinals.

COMMERCE – Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s basketball team faces top-seeded Southeastern Wednesday morning in Lake Charles’s Southland Conference Tournament semifinals.

RECORDS: A&M-Commerce is 14-18 overall, and Southeastern is 19-9.

THE BRACKET: The game-winner between the two Lions advances to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship game on Thursday at 4:00 pm. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar play in the other semifinal on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Lion Women’s Basketball battles UIW in SLC Quarterfinals.

COMMERCE – The Southland Conference tournament continues on Tuesday morning for the eighth-seeded Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s basketball team, who faces fourth-seeded UIW in the quarterfinals.

The fourth-quarter charge gives the Lions the win over Lady Demons in SLC Tournament First Round.

 

LAKE CHARLES, La. – For the sixth straight season, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s basketball team has recorded a postseason win after outscoring the eight-seeded Northwestern State, 26-9, in the fourth quarter in the Legacy Center on its way to a 79-66 win on Monday afternoon to advance in the Southland Conference Tournament. 

The Lions won their first postseason contest as a Division I program and face fourth-seeded UIW on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the quarterfinals. DesiRay Kernal (Newton, Kan.) matched her career-high with 27 points for the Lions, while Mia Deck (Frisco – Lone Star) scored 14 in the second half. 

POST-GAME PRESS CONFERENCE 

The Lions jumped out to an early 7-2 lead behind four points from Kernal. Northwestern State scored the next six while holding the Lions without a point for two minutes and 57 seconds. 

Kernal scored eight of the team’s first 11 points. A&M-Commerce did not make a field goal for the first quarter’s final two minutes and 43 seconds but held an 18-15 lead after the first 10 minutes. 

The Lions led by as much as eight in the second quarter at 29-21, but NSU kept it close by hitting back-to-back three-pointers. Jiselle Woodson knocked down four three-pointers in a row to bring the Lady Demons to a 33-33 tie. Northwestern made seven of nine to take a 38-37 lead in the first half’s final minute. Woodson scored 18 in the first half. 

Northwestern State scored six of the first seven points of the second half to lead by five, its largest lead to that point. The Lady Demons started the third, shooting 63 percent, while the Lions shot 33 percent, which allowed the Lady Demons to go up by seven while leading for the entirety of the third quarter. 

The Lions scored the final two points of the third quarter and started the fourth with five straight to retake the lead at 58-57 on a jumper by Mia Deck (Frisco – Lone Star). Northwestern State shot just 19 percent in the fourth quarter, with the Lions taking their largest lead in the final 10 seconds.  

Kernal was 10 for 13 at the line and recorded a double-double with 15 rebounds and 27 points. She also drew nine fouls in the game. Kernal led the team with four steals while tying Laila Lawrence (Lewisville) for four assists each. Lawrence scored 14 in the game and missed a double-double by just one point. 

Deck added 17 points, while Olivia Russell (Auburn Hills, Mich.) scored eight. All but one player in the game scored at least one point for the Lions. A&M-Commerce had a 45-21 edge in rebounding and a 40-20 edge in points in the paint. The Lions shot 26 for 34 at the line, tied for 16th all-time. 

Woodson scored 32 points for the Lady Demons, only one other NSU player scored in double-digits, and it was 2022-23 first-team all-Southland player Candice Parramore, who tallied ten but fouled out in the game.

Under Armour named Sefe Student-Athlete of the Week

COMMERCE – Under Armour selected Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team’s Diamond Sefe as this week’s Under Armour Student-Athlete of the Week. 

Sefe (Carson, Calif.) batted .545 last weekend, with four of the five games coming against teams that played in the NCAA tournament last season. She also had one home run and four RBIs while posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage behind the plate. 

The Lions won the last two games in Arizona with wins over CSUN and a walk-off win over reigning Big Sky Conference champion Weber State. A&M-Commerce’s next scheduled games are next Tuesday at North Texas, with the doubleheader starting at 4:00 pm. 

The Under Armour Student-Athlete of the Week is awarded by Lion Athletics each week during the academic year.

McCulloch tied for fourth at Colin Montgomerie Invite.

SUGAR LAND – Nathan McCulloch tied for fourth, and the Texas A&M University-Commerce men’s golf team tied for ninth place after Monday’s two rounds at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational hosted at Sweetwater Golf Club. 

McCulloch (Edinburgh, Scotland) carded a two-round score of 138. He shot a 68 in the morning round and finished the day with a 70. He is four strokes off the lead going into Tuesday’s final game and tied for fourth are five golfers. 

Tied for 22nd place is Simon Haas (Lorch, Germany) with a score of 144 (71-73), and Balint Zavaczki (Nyíregyháza, Hungary) is tied for 49th place with a two-round score of 149 (77-72), while tied for 71st place is Chance Mulligan (Dallas – Bishop Dunne) with a score of 155 (80-75). 

Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk (Phuket, Thailand) shot a 76 in the morning round but was disqualified in his second-round score as he signed a scorecard with the wrong score. Phaithuncharoensuk’s first and third rounds scores will count towards his season averages, but he will finish last in this week’s tournament. 

Southeastern holds a three-stroke lead atop the team leaderboard, scoring 562 (276-286) over Weber State. A&M-Commerce (292-290) is tied with Omaha for ninth place with a score of 582. 

The third and final round of the tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. You can find live results HERE.
