Volleyball picked fourth in conference preseason poll

COMMERCE– The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team has been picked to finish fourth in this year’s Lone Star Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The annual poll results were released Tuesday by the LSC.

The Lions are coming into their eighth season under head coach Craig Case. The team went 19-12 during the 2016 regular season and earned the fifth seed in the LSC postseason tournament. Eventual tournament champion Angelo State has been chosen to place first in this season’s poll after winning the South Central Regional Tournament and finishing as the runner-up in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament. Tarleton State was predicted to finish second while Texas A&M-Kingsville was picked to finish third.

“Preseason rankings are very difficult to come up with,” Case said. “So much can change from last season with graduations and transfers that you don’t know how things are going to look for everyone. To be picked fourth is complimentary and exciting but our goal is to win a championship. Where we’re picked doesn’t change our focus moving forward.”

The 2017 season opens with four matches in two days as part of the 2017 TexAnn Invitational in Stephenville. The Lions will face Southwest Baptist and Central Oklahoma on Sept. 1 and Maryville (Mo.) and Rockhurst on Sept. 2. After another week of away matches, the Lions will host their home opener on Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. in The Field House against Dallas Baptist.

“This is going to be an exciting year for the LSC volleyball league,” Case said. “There are so many strong players and teams this year that every night is going to have a playoff-level intensity. All 11 teams are so close that every night is going to come down to who shows up to play the best volleyball. You can’t ask for more exciting volleyball than that.”
