Texas Death Row Inmate Spared Lethal Injection

The U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay of execution for Ruben Gutierrez’s lethal-execution Tuesday night. Gutierrez fatally stabbed an 85-year-old woman more than two decades ago. His attorneys had argued the Texas prison system would not allow a chaplain to accompany him in the death chamber, violating his religious rights.
