John William King, the man accused along with two others of dragging a man about three miles behind a pickup in Jasper in June of 1998 is slated for execution this evening. King, and co-defendants Lawrence Russell Brewer, formerly of Sulphur Springs, and Shawn Berry, dumped James Byrd’s body in front of an African American church for parishioners to find on their way to Sunday services. Brewer was executed and Berry is serving life in prison.
