DALLAS – June 27, 2024 – We are excited to announce that the State Fair of Texas concessionaires are officially off to the races with a new lineup of incredible, edible innovations for the public to taste at the Fair this fall. They have revealed the State Fair of Texas Big Tex® Choice Awards semi-finalists, and the 2024 lineup is sure to remedy your sweet tooth, savory craving, or maybe even both. The 20th Annual Big Tex® Choice Awards, presented by Karbach Brewing Company, offers another year of creative connections and celebrates a milestone in the awards’ history.
Since 2005, the Big Tex Choice Awards have been a staple of the State Fair of Texas; across 111 finalists, 48 celebrity judges, and 40 different concessionaires—only 42 entries have cut to become part of the exclusive club of unique culinary creations over the years. The Big Tex Choice Awards began encouraging concessionaires to introduce new and unique foods to the Fair. Now, food vendors tinker for months and sometimes even years with recipes they think could have what it takes to bring home one of the coveted trophies. The Big Tex® Choice Awards has become a world-renowned food competition, putting the Most Texan Place on Earth on the map for innovative creations.
After much deliberation in the first round of judging, they tallied the scores, and the results are as follows: 24 semi-finalists were named to move forward. Comprised of 10 savory and 14 sweet entries, these semi-finalist contenders are one step closer to the main event, where they will compete for one of three winning titles:
“Best Taste – Savory,” “Best Taste – Sweet,“ and “Most Creative.”
SAVORY
Deep Fried Crispy Vietnamese Crepes
Imagine the sensation of biting into a golden, crunchy crepe filled with savory meat, shrimp, and fresh veggies perfectly paired with a homemade sauce. They craft each crepe meticulously, delicately rolled, and dipped in a special golden crepe batter infused with hints of coconut sweetness before being fried to crispy perfection. Hammy Pimento Meltdown
A grilled pimento cheese sandwich with black forest ham is a delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich. We take some of German cuisine’s most iconic culinary staples and pile them on State Fair of Texas style. They top a handmade pizza dough that bakes to a buttery crunch with a crave-able base of spicy mustard-infused white cream sauce. We blanket the pizza with a gooey, tangy blend of mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. Lastly, they top that melty goodness with thinly sliced German sausage, crispy, skillet-fried German potatoes, sautéed onions, green peppers, and, of course, SAUERKRAUT!
Texas Fried Burnt End Bombs
Ready for an explosion of flavor? It’s the Texas Fried Burnt End Bombs! A delicious, tender beef burnt end is wrapped with shredded potato, bacon, and a green onion mixture and fried to a perfect golden brown. To complement this flavorful blend, the Texas Fried Burnt End Bombs are served with a side of raspberry chipotle barbeque sauce to add a kick of sweetness and heat.
Triple Meat Big Back Snack
They present this Texas-sized indulgence with a boastful five layers and seven tantalizing flavor profiles. The base consists of Abuela’s cherished elote street corn recipe, including a fusion of roasted sweet corn, lime, lemon garlic butter, cumin, and chili powder. The contest kicked off in June with an impressive 65 entries represented by 40 concessionaires. All competitors are required to have at least one year of experience as concessionaires at the State Fair of Texas before they can enter the competition. With food as a cornerstone of the annual State Fair, these contenders are more than just successful small business owners; they have proven themselves authentic representations of the dedication and passion brought to the table each year.
A panel of internal judges heads up the unique selection process used in the annual competition. It requires “blind judging“ from start to finish, meaning the panel does not know which concessionaire is behind each recipe. It allows the scoring to be entirely based on the food entry itself and leaves no room for bias toward concessionaires since we do not reveal their identities to the panel. To vie for a spot in this semi-final round, contestants put their creativity to the test by creating an enticing name and description for their original concoctions. Then, the judges taste and score each dish to see if they are as delicious as they sound and look. Faced with a solid lineup of tempting treats, the judges based their scores on three main ingredients: fairgoer appeal, creativity, and taste. In mid-August, the semi-finalists will be further narrowed down, with the best of the best from these sweet and savory treats earning a spot in the finals. The anticipation will be ultimately high when we announce the Fair-food finalists. The top ten entries will compete in the final round at this year’s Big Tex® Choice Awards ceremony.
