MLB

Wednesday, contract options fell by the wayside for a dozen baseball free agents in the offseason. Among them was St. Louis Cardinal’s Gold Glove second baseman Kolten Wong. Many teams are cutting costs after a shortened regular season played with no fans due to COVID-19. Baseball’s labor contract expires after the 2021 season, and that puts 2022 at risk of a work stoppage.

Justin Turner had tested positive for COVID and violated MLB protocols when he returned to the field to celebrate with his Dodgers on the field after their win. The team pulled him in the seventh inning after MLB learned that he had tested positive.

NFL

The Houston Texans closed their team facility after a player tested positive for Coronavirus. The team is now testing the rest of the players. Houston has a bye after losing to Green Bay last Sunday 35-20 dropping the Texans to 1-6.

NASCAR

Kyle Bush won for the first time in 2020 to extend a 16-season streak when he won the NASCAR playoff race at Texas.

HIGH SCHOOL

Mt Vernon plays Pottsboro this week, and if Pottsboro wins, that would be a three-way tie with Mineola. Mineola defeated Pottsboro but lost to Mt Vernon. Pottsboro is playing Winnsboro in Week 11.

The Mount Pleasant High School Fishing Team continued their season in the Texas High School Bass Association (THSBA) tournament on Lake Palestine on October 24, with one pair of anglers finishing 2nd out of 96 teams. Seniors Zane Phillips and Tyler Welborn (boat Captain Jeff Brown) placed 2nd out of 96 teams with five fish weighing 15.24 pounds. They were each awarded a $500 scholarship, a new rod, and a plaque. The seniors Bryce Bartlett and Ethan Cota (boat Captain Randy Hinton) came in 30th with two fish weighing 6.47 pounds. Seniors Mya Clark and MaKayla Houchin (boat Captain Terry Gibson) placed 63rd with one fish weighing 1.58 pounds, and the team of freshmen Cody Slone and Clayton Miller (boat Captain Bobby Slone) placed 64th with one fish weighing in at 1.50 pounds. The team will be back on the water on Lake Tyler in November. They would also like to thank their sponsors for their continued support this season!
