After a 16-hour day of meetings that stretched into early Tuesday morning, Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association moved the deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement. They moved it to save regular-season games from being canceled to 4:00 pm CT Tuesday.

Less than a week after his controversial hire as the new offensive coordinator at Grambling State University, Art Briles has resigned. The former disgraced Baylor coach said he didn’t want to be a “distraction” at the prominent HBCU with a storied football program in northern Louisiana, leaving the program just five days after coach Hue Jackson surprisingly hired him. Last Thursday, the hire was officially confirmed and immediately drew criticism, including former Grambling quarterback and Head Coach Doug Williams. They reportedly said he would no longer support Grambling’s football program. On Monday, Briles thanked Grambling for that opportunity in a brief statement.

Sulphur Springs takes on Lufkin at Tyler Junior College Wagstaff at 6:00 pm Tuesday. Lufkin is 34-4, and the Wildcats are 29-9 coming into the game.

The Tigers face off with 13th ranked Highland Park in the regional quarterfinal game of the UIL 5A playoffs at formerly John Tyler High School. Tip-off is 7:00 Tuesday, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. You have to have a credit card at the gate to buy tickets. They do not accept cash.

SOFTBALL

Mt Pleasant takes on Ore city at 5:00 pm Tuesday. Ore City canceled the JV game.

DIXIE BASEBALL

Former Texas Dixie State UIC and umpire with the Longview Chapter, Larry Langford, passed away earlier Monday. Larry was very courageous in his long fight against numerous health issues. Elected to our Hall of Fame in 2021, Larry served as the Texas State UIC for many years and was a member of the Henderson, Texas Youth Baseball Board for over 30 years.

Bill Sanders introduced District 5 to John Toppings, the new North Regional Assistant State director, and Ronald Green as the District Director for District 5. They awarded tournaments for Division I to Paris, receiving T-Ball, 7U Coach Pitch, and 8U Coach Pitch. Mt Pleasant will host AAA, 9U, Ozone, 11U, and Ranger tournaments.

District 5 Leagues. Division II tournaments go to Honey Grove -receiving T-Ball. Commerce had the first option but passed. Franklin County will host Coach Pitch, Valliant gets the Ozone, and Bonham hosts the Ranger tournament.
