Two Claim Victory For Texas House Speaker

A Lubbock State Representative says he has the necessary votes to become the next speaker of the Texas House. Still, another candidate is also claiming victory. State Rep. Dustin Burrows said, “The speaker’s race is over, and I have secured enough votes to be Speaker of the House for the next session.” Burrows says the support is bipartisan. The Texas Tribune reports Burrow’s announcement came just minutes after State Rep. David Cook of Mansfield said he had been declared the endorsed candidate by the House GOP caucus on a vote of 48-14. Previous speaker Dade Phelan withdrew from the race Friday.
