The State Board of Education approved amendments to a proposed Long-Range Plan for Public Education during its Sept. 11-14 meeting. Final adoption of the plan is expected to occur at the board’s Nov. 13-16 meeting.
Four years in the making, this plan creates recommendations to be achieved by the year 2030 in four broad categories.
The goals of access and equity serve as the overarching vision of the proposed plan. These goals refer to funding, as well as access to advanced courses and modern technology.
Identified as key topics under access and equity are:
• Student Engagement and Empowerment
• Family Engagement and Empowerment
• Educator Preparation, Recruitment, and Retention
The draft plan as amended in September is available online. The plan includes the Long-Range Plan for Technology.
Steering Committee
The plan was crafted with the help of an 18-member steering committee, which included State Board members, local school board members, administrators, teachers, parents, business representatives, students, professors, and representatives of the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Workforce Commission, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
The steering committee met in Austin five times during the 2017-2018 school year. The meeting dates were:

Community Conversation meetings
The board and the steering committee hosted 10 in-person community meetings around the state, as well as two virtual meetings, to gather comments on the four identified topics. Summaries of public comments received at the meetings are available online.
Texans give input via a survey
Along with attending community meetings, almost 11,500 Texans provided input through an online survey available in English and Spanish. The survey results are now available.
