Paris – Area volleyball teams were in action over the weekend. The Prairiland Lady Patriots finished as the runner-up in the gold bracket, while the Detroit Lady Eagles were champions of the silver bracket at the North Hopkins tournament. Chisum won the gold bracket consolation, while Roxton won the consolation in the silver bracket. The Paris Lady Cats were also consolation winners at the Wills Point tournament and the North Lamar Pantherette’s were 3rd place finisher at Denison.
Mount Pleasant – The countdown is on. Week 1 of the Texas High School football season kicks off beginning on Thursday when the Daingerfield Tigers host the Hughes Springs Mustangs while the Gilmer Buckeyes host the Liberty Eylau Leopards. Kickoff is at 7:30. On Friday the Mt. Pleasant Tigers open up the season on the road against North Forney. The Pittsburg Pirates travel to Crandall. Rivercrest will host Chisum. Paul Pewitt is at Sabine and Mt. Vernon is on the road at Caddo Mills. All games kick off at 7:30.
Sulphur Springs – The countdown is on. Week 1 of the Texas High School football season kicks off this weekend. On Friday night the Sulphur Springs Wildcats host Sherman at Prim Stadium. The Cooper Bulldogs hit the road to take on Farmersville. Commerce will travel to Lone Oak. Como Pickton is at Grand Saline. Winnsboro will visit West Rusk. Emory Rains will host Quinlan Ford and Mt. Vernon will be on the road at Caddo Mills. Sulphur Springs and Sherman will kick off at 7pm All other games begin at 7:30.
Over the weekend the Texas Rangers lose two out of three to the Tampa Bay Rays, including an 8-4 loss yesterday afternoon. Atlanta, Texas native Drew Stubbs homered in the defeat. The Rangers fall to 73-52 on the season, but still lead the AL West by 6 games over Seattle. Texas will have the day off today before beginning a series in Cincinnati against the Reds tomorrow.
On Friday the Dallas Cowboys offense shines in pre-season game number 2, defeating Miami 41-14. The Cowboys racked up 263 yards through the air with 2 touchdowns, with 199 yards and both scores coming from rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. Dallas also had 170 yards and three scores on the ground.
The 2016 Rio Olympics came to a close yesterday, but not before the United States added to their medal count. On Saturday the U.S. women’s basketball team collected gold after beating Spain 101-72. Yesterday the men defeated Serbia 96-66. In the final medal count the United States finished with 121 total and 46 gold. The closing ceremony to officially wrap up the 31st summer Olympics was held last night. Gymnast Simone Biles carried the flag to represent the U.S.
