Utility Scams

Your BBB serving North Central Texas is warning consumers to beware of the utility imposter scam beginning to target our area. This scam is not new to BBB and is most common in the winter and summer months when people are most likely to need their heat or air conditioning. The imposters will threaten that they will shut off your electricity if you don’t pay up.

Thursday morning, a Burkburnett, TX consumer reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be Oncor Electric Delivery offering a discount of 15%. When she refused to provide information from her bill, the Oncor imposter then hung up.

BBB tips to avoid this scam:

· Remember, prepaid debit cards, gift cards, or wire transfers are always a red flag as a payment form.

· If you receive any unsolicited calls, please contact your electric provider using a number you find on your bill.

Last Friday, BBB pre-recorded this information/advice in anticipation of receiving reports on this scam due to the frigid temperatures.
