Hours after placing All-Star outfielder Mike Trout on the 10-day injured list with a broken left wrist, the Los Angeles Angels saw their run of bad injury luck continue in their game Tuesday against the San Diego Padres. Third baseman Anthony Rendon was removed from the Angels’ 8-5 loss in the fourth inning after fouling a ball off his leg. The team said he had a left shin contusion, and the X-rays were negative. Then, two-way star Shohei Ohtani (SHOW-hay / on-TAH-nee) departed with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

NFL

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Vince Tobin, who helped the franchise end a 50-plus-year playoff victory drought, died Monday. He was 79. The cause of death was not immediately known.

NBA

The NBA will be testing out a proposed in-game penalty for flopping during summer league. A flop, which referees at the game will determine, will be penalized by awarding the opposing team one free throw and possession of the ball. Officials will give the player who commits the flop an unsportsmanlike technical foul, which won’t count toward personal fouls or lead to an ejection. Officials won’t be required to stop live play from calling a flopping violation.

US Women’s Open

As much as she has been able to, Wie West, 33, has written her final script by deciding to make this year’s U.S. Women’s Open at this historic venue her last competitive tournament ever. It ends when she walks the 18th hole at Pebble Beach.

COLLEGE

Five-star wide receiver Cameron Coleman, the top wideout in the 2024 class, committed to Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M on Tuesday. Coleman is No. 8 overall in the 2024 ESPN 300 and the sixth ESPN 300 prospect in the 2024 cycle for the Aggies. Along with his official visit to College Station in June, the Central High (Phenix City, Alabama) product also visited Auburn and LSU last month.

HIGH SCHOOL

Colton Reynolds

The Miller Grove ISD has named Colton Reynolds the new District Athletic Director, head basketball, and head cross country coach.  Reynold’s last assignment was at North Hopkins ISD, and for the seven years before that coached at Commerce. Reynolds replaces Dalton Herndon, who left to take over the Ector girls’ basketball and softball programs.

DYB

Mt Pleasant defeated Atlanta 12-0 to take Ozone North Zone in Paris. Heston Horn fired a two-hit shutout with 13Ks in the semi-finals vs. Paris. Mt Pleasant will take on Livingston in a best-of-three in Longview this weekend. Both teams will represent Texas in the World Series in Ruston, Louisiana, the first weekend in August.
