TENNIS

Not long after Serena Williams’ name was absent from the entry list for the Australian Open, she confirmed the obvious: the seven-time champion won’t play the 2022 edition of the season-opening major in January. Williams, 40, hasn’t played since retiring from her first-round match at Wimbledon with a right hamstring injury, and her ranking has slipped to No. 41. She won the last 23 Grand Slam singles titles at the 2017 Australian Open.

COLLEGE

Last week LSU announced that Brian Kelly was its new coach. However, this week the word is out that LSU is losing its starting quarterback Max Johnson and his brother, Jake, a prized tight end recruit. Max Johnson announced Tuesday that he plans to enter the transfer portal. A sophomore and the son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson, he emerged as the team’s starter late last year and appeared in every game this season.
