Wednesday’s Sports

NFL

The NFL’s steady increase in offensive production took a step back this season. The average points per game for teams dropped from a record 24.8 in 2021 to 23 this season as improved defense, some quarterback-related COVID absences, more holding calls, and visiting groups dealing with crowds likely made an impact. The drop of 1.8 points per game per team was the second most significant single-season decline since the merger, behind only the 2.0 points per game from 1976 to 1977.

The Giants send Coach Joe Judge packing after going 10-23 in two.

Texas Tech went on a 10-0 run to end the first half cutting Baylor’s lead to 31-26. The Red Raiders ended Baylor’s 21-game winning streak, the third-longest in Big 12 history two games shy of tying Baylor’s own Big 12-record 23-game winning streak (2019-20).

Aggie track star Deon Lendore died in a car crash Monday, according to Texas A&M head track coach Pat Henry. Lendore served at Texas A&M as a volunteer assistant coach with 400-meter and 800-meter running athletes. According to Henry, Lendore was on his way home from practice at the time of the crash. Lendore has appeared in the past three Olympic games.

HIGH SCHOOL

Do you remember the September story about four Caldwell high school female student-athletes forcing another to strip on a school bus? All but Sophie Goodman was in court Tuesday. The Milam County District Attorney accepted Marina Brinkman, Kadie Harman, Katherine Hart’s plea deal was fined $4,000 and received one year of deferred adjudication. Facing felony charges, the three students will eventually have their records deleted as part of the deal.
