Wednesday’s Sports

OLYMPICS

An ongoing legal issue that could affect the medalists in the team figure skating competition at the Beijing Olympics has caused a delay in the award ceremony. The ceremony would award the Russian team the gold medals, the United States silver, and Japan bronze, but they skipped that from its scheduled slot late Tuesday. International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said the reason was a “legal consultation” required with the governing body of skating.

Did you hear about the guy’s basketball game last night?

Non-ranked Arkansas (19-5) upset No. 1 Auburn (22-2) 80-76 Tuesday in Fayetteville and overtime. That snapped the Tiger’s 19-game winning streak.

HIGH SCHOOL

Waskom ISD named Greg Pearson as its new athletic director and head football coach. Pearson spent the last four years as athletic director and head football coach at Brownsboro, where he went a combined 11-29 with the Bears. After four years there, he retired and can’t officially start with Waskom until July 1. Before Brownsboro, Pearson was defensive coordinator for seven years at Waskom.

As learned, a sophomore student died after collapsing during a basketball game in Alto on Tuesday. Devonte Mumphrey fell in the second quarter of the game and later passed away. He was a basketball and football player at Alto High School, and they were playing against Mt Enterprise Tuesday night. They had nominated Mumphrey for Week 12 for Mr. Texas Basketball, which Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball selects.
