Hardin-Simmons senior second baseman Mason McCord of Greenville hit .444 (4-for-9) with two runs scored, a home run, double, and three RBI as the Cowgirls went 2-1 against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Mary Hardin-Baylor junior guard Josiah Johnson of Big Sandy led the No. 16 Cru with 27.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game as they went 3-0 on the week. He scored 31, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer to defeat LeTourneau 79-77 in the battle of the top teams in the ASC Monday night. Johnson followed with 26 points and seven boards in a win at Howard Payne and 25 points, six rebounds, five assists at Sul Ross State. Johnson’s fourth Player of the Week and 11th of his career.

HIGH SCHOOL

Tuesday, the Marshall Mavericks found someone no stranger competing against East Texas teams. Jack Alvarez is the new head football coach and athletic director for the Mavericks. Alvarez is a 24-year head coaching veteran who has had stops in Kirbyville, Ennis, Copperas Cove, and Cuero, where he led the Gobblers to the postseason in both years. In 2014 he led the Ennis Lions to a state championship and took Kirbyville to the title game in 2008 and 2009.
