Carter BloodCare

One in three will need blood in their lifetime.

CHRISTUS Mother Frances, St. James Catholic hosts community drives this spring

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas (February 28, 2019) – More than 15-million pints of blood are transfused in this country each year. That exceeds 40-thousand pints daily. Hospitals in north, central and east Texas are using only a fraction of that amount, but Carter BloodCare still requests 1,000 volunteer blood donors each day to keep pace with local hospital demands. Blood cannot be manufactured. Donors are therefore an essential part of many health care success stories.

Auto accidents, surgery, cancer treatments, blood loss during childbirth – these are only a few examples of life moments requiring blood transfusions. One in three people will need a blood transfusion in their lifetime, yet, fewer than one in three people volunteer to give blood.

CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital in Sulphur Springs is hosting a blood drive from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at 115 Airport Road in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Lanie Wright at (903) 571-9667.

St. James Catholic Church is hosting a blood drive from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24 at 297 Texas St. in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Joe West at (903) 885-1222.

Eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water one to two hours before giving blood. Standard eligibility requirements are a minimum weight of 110 pounds, the donor feels well that day and presents a government-issued photo ID at each donation.

Potential blood donors may volunteer at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give blood independently, and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
