Lamar County Genealogical Society

The Lamar County Genealogical Society March meeting will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday (Mar 13). Our speaker will be Lynn Patterson. Lynn and his son Matt have done extensive research on the Patterson family history in the Brookston area.

You do not have to be a member to attend meetings of the Society, so please come and bring a friend. The Lamar County Genealogical Society and Library is at the south entrance to the historic Santa Fe Depot, 1135 Bonham Street, Paris, Texas.

Lynn Patterson was born in 1954, the eldest son of L. P. (Pete) and Doris Patterson, grew up and still resides in the Brookston community. Lynn was a member of the class of 1972 of West Lamar High School. He is a graduate of Paris Junior College and East Texas State University receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Physical Ed in 1976 and Masters of Educational Administration in 1982. He began his teaching career in 1976 at West Lamar teaching math and coaching girls’ athletics.

In 1988 Lynn was named principal of Chisum High School when the new high school building first opened and continued in that capacity for the next 16 years. He retired from education in 2011 after 35 years of service.

He currently is owner and operator of Patterson Brangus, a cattle ranch in western Lamar County. He and his wife, Marvin Ann, are life-long members of Oak Park United Methodist Church in Paris. He is an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Paris, having served as a Lt. Gov. of the Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis District. He is the area coordinator for the Texas Ramp Project, a non-profit organization that builds wheelchair ramps for clients in Lamar, Red River and Delta counties. Lynn is also President of the Lamar County Imagination Library Foundation, which provides free, age-appropriate books for pre-school children. He is currently serving as President of the Friends and Alumni Association of Paris Junior College. In his spare time, he continues to enjoy sports officiating, presently serving as President of the Paris Chapter of the Texas High School Basketball Officials Association.

Lynn is married to his wife of 43 years, the former Marvin Ann King, who is currently enjoying retirement after serving as District Clerk of Lamar County for 22 years. They have two sons, Matt and Kyle, daughters-in-law Beth and Amanda and grandchildren Carly, Wesley, Wade, Van, and Ryan.

The Lamar County Genealogy Library is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm., and Thursday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Also, the library is open the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm as well as the 2nd and 4th Saturdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
