Opening Endless Possibilities Through Coding At North Lamar

Higgins Elementary first-grader Elliot Edwards watches a mouse she coded as it goes through a maze.

Combining the sense of logic with intuition

First, second and third-grade GT classes at Higgins Elementary and Everett Elementary have been working on coding. First-grade students are using a sequence of codes to program a “mouse” and guide him to the Christmas tree at the end of the maze. Second and third-grade students are using the program Scratch to create a game or story through coding.

Everett second grade GT students Addison Neisler, Callen Sheridan, and Tommy Woods use iPads to work on a coding assignment.

“Coding is something that is very beneficial for all students to learn,” said North Lamar GT teacher Lara Fendley.  “Technology will be a huge piece of future careers and everyday life for students. In GT classes, we are excited to learn some beginning coding!”
