On Thursday, December 14, 2017, Paris Regional Medical Center’s Robotic-Assisted Surgery Team completed its 2000th surgical case. The historical event was led by Dr. Robert Young, general surgeon, and First Asst. Bethany Sloan and Jasz Blake. Dr. Young is one of ten physicians at Paris Regional Medical Center that utilize the minimally invasive da Vinci® Surgical System to perform surgeries that result in smaller incisions and reduced healing time.
“Our team has accomplished an incredible feat by completing 2000 robotic-assisted surgeries in a span of three years. During these procedures, the surgeon sits comfortably at a console, viewing 3D, high-definition images of the patient’s anatomy. The surgeon uses controls below the viewer to move the instrument arms and camera. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient. Some of the surgical procedures that utilize the robot are hysterectomy, hernia, and gallbladder removal.
