Sports Update For Wednesday Sept. 25

Last night the Detroit Lady Eagles defeated Rivercrest in five sets. In the win, Britney Ricks had 12 kills, 4 blocks, 4 digs, 1 ace, and was 18-18 from the service line. Kaisen Eldridge finished with 18 assists and 3 aces. Jordan Williams finished with 10 digs and 2 aces.

In other action, North Lamar swept Trenton in their final game before district play. Chisum swept Pittsburg while Prairiland lost to number one ranked Farmersville in three sets. While Paris lost to Anna.

The Harris rankings are out and the Paris Wildcats dropped one spot to number four. Waco LaVega leapfrogged them in the rankings. Argyle and Carthage remain the same. Paris will begin district play Friday night in Melissa. Pregame on 101.9 KBUS begins at 7:00 pm.

Houston Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole continued to amaze the baseball world Tuesday, collecting 14 strikeouts in his second-last regular-season start of the season. Cole’s 20th start with double-digit strikeouts tied the all-time MLB record, as he joined Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, and Sandy Koufax as the only pitchers in history to accomplish the feat. The game also marked the eighth straight in which the 29-year-old has punched out at least 10 batters, which also ties a league record co-owned by Chris Sale (2015, 2017) and Pedro Martinez (1999).

Eduardo Rodriguez labored through five innings to get his 19th win, allowing more runs than he had in his previous seven starts combined, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers 12-10 on Tuesday. Game 2 of the series is tonight at 7:05 pm.

The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed wide receiver Laquon Treadwell four weeks after parting ways with the former first-round pick. The move reflects concerns the Vikings have about their wide receiver depth after Chad Beebe was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. He suffered torn ligaments in his ankle during Sunday’s 34-14 win over the Oakland Raiders and is not expected to undergo surgery.

The New England Patriots, who are one of the few teams in the NFL to still feature the fullback position, sustained a blow to their offense Monday when James Develin was placed on injured reserve. Develin, who was the AFC’s fullback in the 2017 Pro Bowl, had suffered a neck injury in the team’s Week 2 victory over Miami. The Patriots promoted fullback Jakob Johnson from the practice squad Saturday.

The Cy-Hawk rivalry game between Iowa and Iowa State could be in jeopardy after University of Iowa President Bruce Harreld questioned whether it should be played in the future in an interview with the school newspaper, the Daily Iowan. His comments came in the wake of members of the Hawkeye marching band saying they were verbally, physically and sexually harassed at the Sept. 14 game in Ames, Iowa.
