Rains County K9’s Death Under Investigation

The Rains County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of the department’s K-9 Kumo. Kumo’s handler and owner found him deceased on May 11. Sheriff Michael Hopkins said the investigation is ongoing, and no other release exists. They will have a memorial service to honor K-9 Kumo later.

Rains County Citizens-

First, I would like to thank all the Rains County Citizens for your patience as we at Rains County Sheriff’s Office have to cope/handle this incident!

I also want all Rains County Citizens to know I will release detailed information on an ongoing investigation once the investigation is complete and all facts are known.

On 5/11/2023 at approximately 1700hrs, They notified me that K9 Kumo was deceased. K9 Kumo’s handler and partner discovered the death. His handler owned K9 Kumo and agreed to work for Rains County Sheriff’s Office in the patrol division.

Rains County Sheriff’s Office has been diligently investigating the cause of this unfortunate loss. We started an internal investigation, and during this investigation, Rains County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, and we have followed state laws.

Due to further ongoing investigation into this incident, we will not release more information now.

Rains County Sheriff’s Office will be having a memorial service for K9 Kumo at a later date.

Rains County Sheriff’s Office has taken up a collection of funds within the Sheriff’s Office to pay for a memorial to be placed in the lobby at the Sheriff’s Office to honor K9 Kumo.
