Northeast Texas Community College – Elizabeth Hoggatt Whately Agricultural Complex – Mt. Pleasant 2886 FM 1735 (Chapel Hill Road)

Learning outdoor skills, meeting people with similar interests and spending time with family and friends is what the Women in the Outdoors program are all about. If you have never attended a WITO event, you are in for a real treat!

This event will be the 20th event hosted by the Northeast Texas Chapter of the NWTF!

You are invited!!!! Bring your gal pals or family and experience a super fun day!!!

  • This event is for women (at least 14 years old with a parent or guardian signature and accompanied by an adult). Currently enrolled college students must be 18 years or older.
  • Registration and check-in begin at 7:00 am. Welcome begins at 8:00.  Get your bid number for the silent auction and raffles that will be running throughout most of the day.

– Payment may be made with cash, check or credit card

  • A group photo will be taken before the first class begins. Wrap up, all silent auction and raffle winners will be announced after last class session. You will need to bring a bag chair, especially for the shooting classes. You will be glad that you did.
  • Registration fee includes a total of  6 hours of instruction (3 or 4 classes), use of the campus facilities, light breakfast, snacks and lunch, 1-year membership to NWTF (plus a 1 year’s subscription to Turkey Country Magazine,)  Memberships are included in your registration and  are important for supporting the conservation efforts of the NWTF.  See last page **“Renewals”

  • Cancelation deadline is October 15. If you cancel after the deadline, you will be responsible for the full program feeYou may send a substitute if you cannot attend. The event will be held rain or shine. 
  • RV Hookups available at the Ag. Complex – includes water and electricity. You may tent camp also. Showers and restrooms are located inside the building. The property is secure.

WITO 2017 Class Descriptions

Saturday’s Activities: Four 90 minute classes unless specified as a *3-hour class

Archery:  Lots of hands-on bow shooting at a variety of bag and 3-D animal-shaped targets. Certified Archery Instructor Nathan Rider will help you discover that the outdoors can be a “bull’s eye paradise.”

Optional:  You may bring your own bow and arrows.

Shotgun 1-2-3:  Time will be spent becoming familiar with all aspects of shotgun shooting: safety, the different types of shotguns, ammunition, and proper gun fit in order to successfully shoot clay targets and have some friendly competition. It’s a great feeling when you break one!

             Cost: $5.00 for shotgun shells

Certified Shotgun Instructor and NET committee member: Dick McCarver

Handgun: You will learn handgun safety and practice shooting in the same official indoor pistol range that our law enforcement uses and have a little friendly competition. Class size will be limited to four shooters each.

        * Cost: $10.00 for 50 rounds of 9mm shells

NRA Certified Instructor: Josh Blackstone

Rifle:   Ready! Aim! Fire! Sometimes shooting a rifle can be daunting. Peggy York, Certified NRA Rifle Instructor will show you that shooting, 22’s are fun, and less noisy thus eliminating that bad habit of flinching. Whether you are plinking away at a target or a tin can, .22 caliber rifles can be enjoyable to shoot.

*Cost:  $5.00 for your .22 caliber cartridges. 

Blacksmithing:  Members of the Four States Iron Munchers Chapter – Texarkana will have you actually forging a decorative and practical piece of metal art. This historical hands-on craft is not just for making horseshoes.

Scrub-a-Dub-Dub:   Come have clean fun with instructor and NET committee member, Pat Brown, as you make your own bar of soothing loofah soap and others plus you will get to take home the soap mold so you can to do this at home.                             

 * Cost: $1.00

Gun Cleaning and Maintenance: Learn how to clean and take care of your firearms yourself. It’s a necessary but not a difficult chore. NWTF’s Gulf States Director of Field Operations Shawn Roberts, instructor.

Dutch Oven CookingReturning to us by popular demand, Luann Waters, the Eclectic Educator, will have you preparing actual Dutch oven recipes while learning about one of the oldest and most valued cooking utensils to date. Enjoy you pioneer moment!  This class will be two class sessions or three hours long.

Self Defense:  You will learn some defensive moves that will help you flee from an attack situation and/or protect yourself. Shay Taylor of Mt Pleasant Martial Arts will show you how.

Container Gardening: You can grow just about anything in a flower pot from veggies to decorative plants.  Master Gardener, Kay Miller, will even let you get your hands dirty in this class. Learn about winter prep, combo pots and other versatile types of plantings and timelines.

Dehydrating Herbs, Veggies, Fruit and Meat: Enjoy creating tasty, healthy snacks and meal additions after the growing season by preserving your harvest or even grocery purchases. Ag. Director Rene McCracken will take you through the steps of dehydrating. You will get to take home some yummy treats.

“Alice” – A Proactive Response to a Man Made Threat  or Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate

Health and Safety Consultant for Region VIII ESC, Lee Gill, will introduce how ALICE teaches you to prepare to handle the threat of an Active Shooter, participate in your own survival while leading others to safety. Though no one can guarantee success in this type of situation, this new set of skills will greatly increase the odds of survival should anyone face this form of disaster. Chaos, panic, and fear can only be minimized – never eliminated – when preceded by preparation and training.

Decorative Bottle Painting:  You add your decorative touches with paint to a really pretty glass tequila bottle.

 Decorative Box Painting: You will paint and decorate the fancy box that really pretty tequila bottle came in.

Hydro Dipping:  Want a unique way to dress up that skull for display? You can also dip pinecones, tree branches, glassware, jars and more to get that interesting marbleizing effect. Dorothy McCarver invites you to bring your own objects or skulls.

Farm to Fork Bonus Cooking Class Friday Before Event

The Ag Club of Northeast Texas Community College will offer an extra gourmet cooking class on Friday afternoon, October 19 from 1:00 to 4:00.

NTCC’s Ag. Director Rene McCracken will share with the class many of her tasty gourmet tips as you do the advanced or “the day before” preparations of delicious Autumn weather flavors for our Saturday’s catered gourmet lunch.

There will only be room for eight ladies so selection will be on a first come first serve basis (via email and confirmation letter). This class is truly based on the “Farm to Fork” concept where you will gather and chop the veggies plus prepare other yummy dishes.

   Cost: Free!!!!!

Autumn Menu:  Chicken and Dumplings, Beef Stew and Cornbread and more!
