Friday’s Sports

ESPN

Thursday, ESPN announced it is laying off about 300 employees and cutting about 500 jobs from its global workforce. It is due to the pandemic’s impact on its business and the “tremendous disruption in how fans consume sports.” ESPN did not say how many job cuts would come at its Bristol, Connecticut, campus. On-air talent, the vast majority having personal contracts, is not expected to be heavily affected. But some of those contracts could be allowed to expire. The company said it has more than 5,000 employees, including about 4,000 in Bristol.

NBA

The National Basketball Players Association voted Thursday to support starting their season on Dec. 22 for a 72-game season.

NFL

Aaron Rogers threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns as the Packers overwhelmed the depleted 49ers 34-17 Thursday night.

A Houston Texans’ player tested positive for COVID, and the team’s facility is closed for cleaning.

HIGH SCHOOL

For the third time this season, Tyler’s Bishop Gorman high school announced Thursday morning that they canceled their homecoming football game against Waco Reicher due to the number of players injured. The first two were COVID-related.

Basketball is getting re-scheduled too. COVID canceled Sulphur Springs Lady Cat’s game tonight because Sherman had to quarantine their team. Mt Pleasant’s girls’ first game became a scrimmage and will be at Mt Pleasant Junior High’s main gym next Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
