Wide receiver Rishard Matthews announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, two days after he was released by the New Orleans Saints with a “left team” designation. In an Instagram post, Matthews wrote that he was fed up by feeling he was disposable as an NFL player and that although he will always be a fan of the NFL, he will not miss the “fakeness” or “brainwashing” that he endured in the league.

Oakland Raiders superstar wide receiver Antonio Brown said on social media on Monday that he is looking forward to rejoining his teammates after losing a grievance against the NFL over wearing his old helmet.

It is considered “very unlikely” that Brown will appeal the decision.  On Friday, Brown had a two-hour conference call with an independent arbitrator to argue why he should be allowed to wear his 10-year-old helmet.

Kyle Lowry of the NBA champion Toronto Raptors says his surgically repaired thumb has not recovered sufficiently enough to allow him to participate with USA Basketball in camp for the FIBA World Cup, and he is withdrawing from consideration for the team. Lowry made the announcement Monday after meeting with his surgeon to gauge the recovery of his thumb, which was operated on last month. He was hoping to be on the court with the Americans this week when they resume practice in Southern California.
