Four local high school students have each received a $1,000 scholarship to Paris Junior College from the Rotary Club of Paris United. The scholarship will cover educational expenses such as tuition, fees, books, room, and board, and is split between fall and spring semesters.
The students met with Rotary Foundation Chair Connie Stauter and President-Elect Alex Fowzer, and PJC Director of Student Life Kenneth Webb. Stauter explained that in addition to grades, involvement in school and financial need, there is one critical factor they look for.
“Most of all we look to see if they’re working somewhere,” said Stauter. “We feel that is the most important activity they can be involved in. That shows their commitment to going to school and being productive and responsible.”
The students include Citlalli Cortes from Paris High School, Tamaze Dangerfield from Roxton High School, Julian Tellez from North Lamar High School, and Jalie Swaim from Chisum High School.
Webb explained expectations for the students, including participation in the Student Government Association, community service, and attending Rotary club lunches when possible.
“We want you to be leaders,” said Webb.
