Over the weekend, the NHL deputy commissioner said the league could play deep into the summer months if it must. He said he believes the NHL could play into August if needed. The Stanley Cup Finals normally happen in June.

PGA

Phil Mickelson generated some buzz Sunday night with golf on pause. Mickelson made waves when he sent a cryptic reply to a Twitter user who asked for a one-on-one match between Lefty and Tiger Woods. Mickelson simply replied “Working on it.” Mickelson and Woods previously faced off in “The Match” in November 2018 at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas. The televised event included a $9-million prize for the winner, and Mickelson took the title from his old-time rival in a playoff.’

Boston Celtics’ guard Marcus Smart tested positive for COVID-19 two weeks ago. Sunday, he announced on social media that the Massachusetts Department of Health cleared him. Smart got the virus after playing the Utah Jazz.

A little over two months ago, Los Angeles Lakers’ legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in Southern California along with his daughter, Gianna, and seven others. The impact of the tragic accident has been wide-reaching, with one of the more uncomfortable aspects being the rush to monetize his death. Sunday, a towel Bryant used during his final game with the Lakers sold for over $30,000 in an online auction. There were 16 bids on the lot, which also included two tickets from that game on April 13, 2016. The winning bid eventually came in at $33,077.16.

BOXING

The International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday postponed the 31st annual induction weekend because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Class of 2020 was due to be enshrined during ceremonies at New York, on June 14 during induction weekend. Instead, they will induct the Class of 2020 along with the Class of 2021 during next year’s induction weekend, June 10-13.

HIGH SCHOOL

MaxPreps named the best high school football players in each state. Texas’ Dematrius Davis, from North Shore in Houston, is the first quarterback since Kyler Murray to lead his school to back-to-back state titles in Texas’ largest classification. The Virginia Tech pledge has thrown for over 6,000 yards and rushed for nearly 2,000 more to go with 103 total touchdowns over the last two years.
