Five ballplayers from East Texans headed to MLB after the 2021 Draft as the White Sox picked up TJC Apache pitcher Taylor Broadway, and Kansas City Royals now own former Tyler Legacy Red Raider Parker Bates. Hunter Hollan, who graduated from Spring Hill and played at San Jacinto Jr. College North, was selected in the 17th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. Next, Colorado Rockies selected Hollan’s high school rival Elijah Trest from White Oak. Trest played high school ball at the University of Arkansas. The final East Texan to be drafted was Halen Green. The Lufkin native was drafted out of TCU in the 20th round by the Chicago White Sox.

USA beat Argentina 108-80 to avoid what would have been the first three-game losing streak in this era of NBA players being able to represent USA Basketball. It was a pre-Tokyo tune-up.

PGA

They scheduled the tournament for July 27-30 at The Cascades Golf & Country Club. Johnny Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M, and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will play in the 51st Higginbotham Texas State Open. According to the Northern Texas PGA, Joyce Crane and Veritex Bank in Tyler will be the sponsors. The tournament is July 27-30 at The Cascades Golf & Country Club.

UIL

A football official from Waco will work with a historic all-female crew at a six-man all-star game on Saturday. Jenifer Calhoun will serve as the umpire. She is a member of the TASO Waco football chapter. The Officiating Crew will also consist of:

It’s the first time for an all-female crew to officiate a high school football game in Texas. The game will be at Wichita Falls Memorial Stadium.

Hallsville defeated Palestine in the Dixie Youth AAA (10U) North Zone Division I.

Whitewright edged Delta County, 6-4 in the Dixie Youth AAA (10U) North Zone Division II

Hallsville over Palestine in the Dixie Youth Ozone (12U) North Zone Division I

Whitewright crushed Winnsboro,12-2, Dixie Youth Ozone (12U) North Zone Division II.

The winners advance to State Championship Series in Longview Friday and Saturday to face South Zone winners.
