Mt Vernon Boys Head To Championship Plus A&M Commerce Lions Begin Tourney Play

In what started to be a Mount Vernon blowout turned to an exciting and close ballgame. The Tigers scored the first 13 pts. of the game and never trailed. The Tigers led by 18 pts., their biggest lead, going into the fourth. Santa Rosa stormed back to pull within one point with 2:57 left in the game and the Tigers in desperate need of someone to step forward to hit a BIG bucket. That, someone, was 6’1, senior Brandon Aguilar. It was his fourth 3 pointer of the game, to make the lead 4 and propel the Tigers to 63-54 win. Kason Pletcher had 22 pts., Tyler Cooper 16 pts. and Aguilar 12 pts. That means Mount Vernon will now take on the Bowie Jackrabbits this Saturday morning at 10:00 am for the 3A State Championship at the Alamodome in San Antonio. You will be able to hear that game live on KLAKE 97.7 and online at klake977.com. If Mount Vernon wins it will be the first time since 1948 that Mt Vernon has won two state championships in one year. That year, it was the football and basketball teams that achieved this lofty milestone that year.

Congratulations to The North Lamar Panthers golf team who placed 1st in the New Haven golf tournament.
