Pitchers will be ejected and suspended for ten games for using illegal foreign substances to doctor baseballs in a crackdown by Major League Baseball that will start Monday. The commissioner’s office, responding to record strikeouts and a league batting average at a more than half-century low, said Tuesday that major and minor league umpires would regularly check all pitchers, even if opposing managers don’t request inspections.

On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys announced that they would be returning to Oxnard, California, for this year’s training camp. The team arrives at their home-away-from-home on June 20. The annual opening ceremonies and state of the team address will take place the following day. The first practice, which will be open to fans, will be on June 22.

College athletes in Texas will soon be able to receive compensation from outside businesses that want to use their name, image, or likeness under a new law Gov. Greg Abbott signed Monday evening. NCAA rules ban athletes from receiving any kind of compensation other than scholarships for playing college sports. This law would not change that ban on direct payment by a college or university but would allow college athletes to receive compensation elsewhere.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s 40 Under 40 list has named Texas A&M University-Commerce offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Billy Riebock. The magazine will feature him in its annual publication, which hits newsstands soon.

HIGH SCHOOL

The University Interscholastic League Legislative Council met Tuesday to decide proposed rule changes in UIL academics, athletics, music, and policy.

The Legislative Council approved a rule to allow UIL member schools to permit the live webcast of regular season football games on Friday night. It does not apply to linear broadcasts. They also approved the modification of rules to comply with House Bill 547, which pertains to the participation of non-enrolled students, or homeschool, in UIL activities if allowed by the local school district.

The council passed a proposal to modify the start dates for both baseball and softball. They also approved a proposal to clarify the authority of the UIL State Executive Committee when an assault of a sports official occurs.

Additionally, the council also placed a proposal to allow four playoff qualifiers for 1A Basketball up for a referendum ballot.

Hallsville’s Scott Mitchell has been with the baseball program for 23 years. Tuesday, Mitchell told his Bobcat team and those in attendance at their end-of-the-season banquet that he no longer would be Hallsville’s skipper. Mitchell has won 529 games as a head coach at Hallsville and his alma mater Kilgore. He is stepping down as the Bobcats head baseball coach but will remain with the school district. Barbers Hill defeated Hallsville 2-1 to claim the 5A crown.

Chapel Hill-Mt Pleasant’s sophomore, Katie Hart, is going into day two Wednesday of the 3A State Golf Tournament setting in the first place. Katie is shot a 74 on day one and leads the tournament two strokes ahead of second and three ahead of third place. Tee-off time is 10:15 this morning.

Sulphur Springs has eight Wildcats who cut the district 15-4A All-District Baseball team released Tuesday. Hayden Hurst is the District Pitcher of the Year.

Hughes Springs’ Dallas Kidwell is headed to LeTourneau to play tennis while Shea Nelson signed a letter of intent to play softball at NTCC.
