The Dallas Cowboys have had a drama filled start to training camp with most of the conversation consisting of talk of Lucky Whitehead’s dismissal and questions surrounding potential player suspensions. We’d like to steer back into the football side of things.
The big question this time surrounded winning. Can the Dallas Cowboys win the NFC East and do they stand a chance at winning the Super Bowl? Let’s dive in.
Recent history is not in the Dallas Cowboys favor when it comes to winning the division. You have to go back to the Eagles hay-days with Donovan McNabb in 2003-2004 to find the last back-to-back NFC East champion. Since it’s gone Giants, Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Redskins, Eagles, Cowboys, Redskins, Cowboys. Of course, trends derail all the time. So, why not the Cowboys? The offense can and should be as dominant as in 2016. The defense will have lots of question, but perhaps no more than the team had a year ago. The NFC East may take the title of the toughest division in the NFL and be winning it will certainly mean you’re one of the few favorites to win a Super Bowl.
So, what are the Cowboys chances of a Super Bowl? I’d put those ambitions on pause for 2017 and set my sights on 2018. There’s just too much uncertainty on defense to stand up and hype this team as a championship favorite. Who’s rushing the passer with consistency? What impact is Jaylon Smith really capable of this year? Who in the secondary is going to create turnovers? Can Sean Lee stay healthy? Now, I guess the stars could align perfectly and the Rod Marinelli genius seeps through the players veins. I just don’t see that happening when you can’t go into the season with any idea who, exactly, is going to be making game changing plays on defense.
