District Basketball Begins Tonight Plus Mavericks Drop 4th Straight In Today’s Sports Update

District basketball tonight has the Chisum boys and girls in Commerce. The Lady Mustangs are 2-1 in district while boys are 1-0. After the win against Cooper Tuesday, Mustang coach Brian Temple talked about a 1-0 start in district.

Both Prairiland teams will be at Mt Vernon. The boys are coming off their thrilling overtime victory while the Lady Patriots are still looking for that first district win.

Paris High will be at home against Lovejoy while the North Lamar Pantherettes will host Texas High. The Panthers will be at home against Mt. Pleasant.

After today’s games, each team will begin a mandatory five-day break from basketball for the holidays.

The Dallas Stars fell to Chicago last night 5-2. Dallas trailed 3-0 in the first but cut the deficit down to two at 3-2. Chicago sealed the win late with a couple empty net goals.

And the Dallas Mavericks fell to the Clippers 125-121 despite a career-high 32 points from rookie Luka Doncic. It’s the fourth loss in a row for the Mavs, who travel to Golden State on Saturday night.

In the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa last night, Marshall surprised USF 38-20.

There are two bowl games set for today, with the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl featuring FIU vs Toledo at 11:30 am and the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl with Western Michigan vs BYU at 3:00 pm. Both games are on ESPN.
New England Patriots wide receiver Josh Gordon has been suspended indefinitely for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the NFL’s drug policy. Gordon, 27, had been suspended by the NFL for most of the previous four seasons because of multiple drug violations. Based on the disciplined schedule in the collective bargaining agreement, Gordon would be facing banishment from the league for any positive test, though he could still apply for reinstatement.

Former USC basketball assistant Tony Bland, one of three former coaches charged in a federal criminal case involving bribery, has reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. Bland, who was fired by the Trojans in January, is expected to receive probation as part of the plea agreement.

Rick Pitino has agreed to a deal to coach in the EuroLeague for the rest of the season. Pitino, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, is expected to coach his first game on Dec. 27. Pitino’s goal is to return to the NBA as a head coach. Pitino, 66, fired a year ago amid an FBI probe at Louisville, will travel to Athens shortly after Christmas to take over a talented, but underachieving, roster that includes several former NBA players.
